Samachar Chandrika
Topic: Print Culture and the Modern World · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 5 "Print Culture and the Modern World"
Meaning
Samachar Chandrika was a Bengali newspaper started in Calcutta in 1822 by Bhabanicharan Bandyopadhyay. Hindu orthodoxy (people who wanted to keep old religious customs) backed it. It was set up to answer the reform ideas of Rammohun Roy. It shows how print shaped the very nature of public debate in Bengal: both sides used newspapers in everyday language to win readers.
Example
Rammohun Roy's Sambad Kaumudi attacked widow immolation (sati, the burning of a widow on her husband's funeral pyre). Samachar Chandrika defended the old customs and opposed his ideas.
Don't confuse with
- Sambad Kaumudi: Rammohun Roy's own reformist Bengali weekly (1821). Samachar Chandrika was the orthodox paper that opposed it.
