Meaning

Sambad Kaumudi was a Bengali weekly started by Rammohun Roy in Calcutta in 1821. It argued for social and religious reform. It attacked widow immolation (sati), idol worship and the power of Brahmin priests. It was written in everyday Bengali so that many more people could follow and join the debate.

Example

Through Sambad Kaumudi, Rammohun Roy argued that sati should be abolished. Hindu orthodoxy answered by commissioning a rival paper, the Samachar Chandrika (1822).

Don't confuse with

  • Samachar Chandrika: the orthodox Bengali paper that opposed Rammohun Roy's views.
  • Mirat-ul-Akhbar: Rammohun Roy's Persian weekly of 1822, not his Bengali paper.
