Swadesamitran
Topic: Print Culture and the Modern World · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
Swadesamitran was a Tamil newspaper that G. Subramania Iyer founded in Madras in 1882. It became a daily in 1899. It carried nationalist ideas to Tamil readers who did not read English. This makes it a key example of how vernacular (Indian-language) papers spread nationalism.
Example
The Tamil poet Subramania Bharati worked on the staff of Swadesamitran in the early 1900s, during the Swadeshi period. Through it, ideas of swadeshi and self-rule reached ordinary readers across the Tamil region.
Don't confuse with
- The Hindu: G. Subramania Iyer also co-founded this paper in 1878, but it was in English. Swadesamitran was his Tamil paper.
