The Hindu

Meaning
The Hindu is a newspaper founded in Madras in 1878 as an English weekly. Its founders were G. Subramania Iyer, M. Veeraraghavachariar and a few other young men. It became a daily in 1889. It grew into an important nationalist voice in south India, criticising colonial policies and backing Indian demands.
Example
The Hindu was started in 1878, the same year as the Vernacular Press Act. Because it was in English, that Act did not cover it. So it could keep commenting on government measures that Indian-language papers found risky to discuss.
Don't confuse with
- Swadesamitran: also founded by G. Subramania Iyer, in 1882, but it was a Tamil paper.
