Young Italy
Topic: The Rise of Nationalism in Europe · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "The Rise of Nationalism in Europe"
Meaning
Young Italy was a secret society that Giuseppe Mazzini founded in Marseilles in 1831, after he was exiled for a failed rising in Liguria. Its aim was a free, united Italy as one republic. Mazzini believed God meant nations to be the natural units of mankind. So he believed Italy could not stay divided into small states.
Example
Young Italy inspired similar groups in other countries. Mazzini himself set up Young Europe in Berne. In 1833, Giuseppe Garibaldi joined the Young Italy movement. Mazzini's risings in 1831 and 1848 failed, and Italy was finally united by the monarchy under Victor Emmanuel II.
Don't confuse with
- Carbonari: an older secret society that Mazzini belonged to before he founded Young Italy.
- Red Shirts: Garibaldi's volunteer army, which led the Expedition of the Thousand in 1860. It was a fighting force, not Mazzini's society.
