All Assam Students' Union

Also called: AASU · Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"

Meaning

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) is a students' body that is not tied to any political party. Together with the Asom Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP), it led the Assam Movement (1979-85) against illegal migrants. It matters because it shows how a students' group could lead a mass movement, end it with an accord, and then help form a ruling party.

Example

The AASU demanded that immigrant names be removed from the voters' lists and that everyone who entered after 1951 be sent back. Its methods included blockades of trains and of oil supplies to Bihar's refineries. The movement ended with the Assam Accord (15 August 1985). The AASU and AAGSP then formed the Asom Gana Parishad, which won power in 1985.

Don't confuse with

  • Asom Gana Parishad (AGP): the political party that the AASU and AAGSP formed after the movement. The AASU itself stayed a students' body.
  • ULFA: an armed group that wanted a sovereign Assam. The AASU used agitation, not arms.
