United Liberation Front of Asom
Also called: ULFA · Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) is an armed group formed in 1979. It fought for a sovereign Assam, meaning an independent country outside India. It matters as an example of an anti-outsider and regional movement in the North-East turning into an armed secessionist one.
Example
In December 2023, ULFA's pro-talks faction signed a peace accord and gave up the armed path. One faction, ULFA (Independent), stayed out of the deal, so the conflict is not fully over (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- All Assam Students' Union (AASU): AASU led the Assam Movement (1979-85) through peaceful agitation and wanted illegal migrants removed. It did not seek a separate country. ULFA took up arms for sovereignty.
