Asom Gana Parishad
Also called: AGP · Topic: Regional Aspirations: J&K, Punjab, the North-East and Accommodation · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"
Meaning
The Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) is a regional party of Assam. It was formed by the All Assam Students' Union (AASU) and the Asom Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP), the two groups that led the Assam Movement, after the Assam Accord of 1985. It matters because it shows a protest movement turning into a party and winning power through elections.
Example
In 1985 the AGP won the Assam election. It promised to solve the "foreigners problem" (illegal migration) and to build a "Golden Assam".
Don't confuse with
- AASU: the students' body that led the agitation. The AGP is the political party that came out of it.
- Assam Gana Sangram Parishad (AAGSP): AASU's partner in the movement. The AGP is a different body formed by both of them.
