Topic: Challenges of Nation Building: Partition, Princely States and Reorganisation · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 7 "Federalism"; Class 12, Ch 1 "Challenges of Nation Building"; Class 12, Ch 7 "Regional Aspirations"
Meaning
In November 2000, Parliament created three new states by dividing three large Hindi-belt states. This marked a change in why new states were made. Language was no longer the main reason. The new reasons were regional culture, tribal identity and complaints that some regions were left behind in development (uneven development).
Example
- Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000.
- Uttaranchal was carved out of Uttar Pradesh on 9 November 2000. It was renamed Uttarakhand in 2007.
- Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar on 15 November 2000. This followed a long tribal movement that goes back to Jaipal Singh's Jharkhand Party.
Don't confuse with
- Linguistic reorganisation (1956): states were then redrawn mainly by the language people spoke. In 2000 all three new states and their parent states spoke Hindi. The reasons were regional, tribal and developmental.
