Meaning

The Telangana movement was a long campaign to separate the Telangana region from Andhra Pradesh. When Andhra Pradesh was formed in 1956, Telangana was given some protections. These were the Gentlemen's Agreement (1956) and the Mulki rules, which kept certain jobs for local residents. Many people in Telangana felt these promises were broken. The movement ended in the creation of Telangana as a state in 2014.

Example

  • 1969: the 'Jai Telangana' agitation broke out.
  • 1973: the Centre answered with the Six-Point Formula and Art. 371D (32nd Amendment).
  • 2001: K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) revived the movement through the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS). The party was renamed Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in 2022.
  • 2009–2014: after KCR's fast, the Centre announced the new state on 9 December 2009. The Srikrishna Committee followed in 2010, and Telangana was formed on 2 June 2014.

Don't confuse with

  • Telangana armed struggle (1946–51): a Communist-led uprising of peasants against feudal landlords in Nizam-ruled Hyderabad. It was about land and oppression, not about statehood.
