Meaning

Telangana became a separate state on 2 June 2014. It was carved out of Andhra Pradesh under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act 2014, a law passed by Parliament. At that time it was India's 29th state. Its creation was the result of a statehood movement that went back to 1969. It shows that Parliament can divide a state and redraw its borders.

Example

After the split, Hyderabad was the common (shared) capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh until 2 June 2024. Andhra Pradesh had to plan a new capital, Amaravati. The division of property and institutions between the two states is still being settled.
