Industrial township
Topic: Urban Local Government: Municipalities and Cities · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
An industrial township is an urban area where a big company provides civic services, such as water, roads and sanitation, by itself. Under the proviso (an added condition) to Art. 243Q, the Governor may exempt such an area from having a municipality. This means a company, not an elected council, can run local services there.
Example
Bhilai, Bokaro and Jamshedpur are commonly cited as industrial townships. In these places, a large steel company has long provided civic services.
Don't confuse with
- Notified area committee: a notified area committee is a government body whose members are all nominated, set up for a fast-growing town. An industrial township's services are run by the company itself.
