Meaning

A town area committee is a body that runs a small town. It is set up under a separate law passed by the state. It has only a few civic functions, such as drainage, roads and street lighting. Its members are wholly or partly elected, so it is a limited, semi-municipal body.

Example

A small market town in a state may not need a full municipal council. The state can set up a town area committee under its own law to look after the town's drains, roads and street lights.

Don't confuse with

  • Notified area committee: all of its members, including the chair, are nominated by the state. A town area committee is wholly or partly elected.
