Also called: Mid-day meal scheme · Topic: Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties · NCERT: Class 11, Ch 2 "Rights in the Indian Constitution"

Meaning

PM POSHAN is the government scheme that gives hot cooked meals to children in government and government-aided schools. It used to be called the mid-day meal scheme and was renamed PM POSHAN in 2021. It is backed by the National Food Security Act (NFSA) 2013. The scheme serves the nutrition goal of Article 47. Class 11 lists the mid-day meal among the ways directives have been put into practice.

Example

A child in a village government school gets a free hot lunch every school day. This improves the child's nutrition, which is the aim of Art. 47. It also encourages the child to attend school, which supports the right to education under Art. 21A.

Don't confuse with

  • Anganwadis under ICDS (since 1975): these serve children below six, under Art. 45 (early childhood care and education). PM POSHAN feeds children who are already in school.
