Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council
Also called: TTAADC · Topic: Special Provisions, Scheduled and Tribal Areas · NCERT: Class 9, Ch 6 "Democracy"
Meaning
The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) is the only autonomous district council in Tripura. It covers about two-thirds of the state. It was first set up by a Tripura state law in 1979. The 49th Amendment (1984) then brought it under the Sixth Schedule, the part of the Constitution that lets tribal areas run their own land, forests, customs and village courts through elected councils. This gave it constitutional protection, so the state government can no longer abolish it by passing an ordinary law.
Example
The Class 9 Democracy chapter describes South Manubankul, a "women-friendly panchayat" in Tripura. That village lies inside the area of the TTAADC.
Don't confuse with
- Panchayats under Part IX: the ordinary panchayat system does not apply to Sixth Schedule areas (Art. 243M). In those areas, village affairs are run under the council's own laws.
