Dedicated freight corridor

Indian Economy glossary

Also called: DFC · Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

A dedicated freight corridor (DFC) is a rail route used only by freight (goods) trains. Because passenger trains do not share the line, goods trains can run faster. They can also carry heavier axle loads (more weight on each set of wheels) and double-stack containers (one container on top of another). DFCs also free up the regular lines for passenger trains. DFCCIL builds them. They are meant to win back freight that has shifted from rail to road.

Example

The Eastern DFC runs about 1,337 km from Ludhiana to Sonnagar. The Western DFC runs about 1,506 km from JNPT (Navi Mumbai) to Dadri.
