Railway electrification
Also called: electrified railway network · Topic: Infrastructure: Transport, Communications and Energy · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 7 "Physical Infrastructure"
Meaning
Railway electrification replaces coal (steam) or diesel engines with electric engines on rail lines. It cuts fuel costs. It also cuts crude-oil imports, which improves energy security. And it reduces pollution. Class 7 sets the target of 100% electric trains by 2025.
Example
About 99% or more of India's broad-gauge network is now electrified. So most trains that once burned imported diesel now run on grid power.
