Meaning

Metro rail is an urban rail system that runs on underground and elevated tracks. It cuts commute times and road traffic. It also reduces pollution, because the trains run on electricity. Under the Metro Rail Policy 2017, central help for a new metro requires a PPP component. The policy also makes transit-oriented development and value capture financing mandatory.

Example

According to Class 7, India has metro rail in 23 cities, with over 1,000 km of track. The Delhi Metro uses solar power.

Don't confuse with

  • Regional rapid transit (RRTS): RRTS links a big city to nearby cities over longer distances, as the Delhi–Meerut Namo Bharat corridor does. Metro serves travel within a city.
