Gross Enrolment Ratio
Also called: GER · Topic: Measuring Development: Income, HDI and Sustainability · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "Development"
Meaning
Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) is the total number of students enrolled at a level of education, of any age, shown as a percentage of the children in the official age group for that level. Children who are older or younger than the official age are also counted in the top number. That is why GER can go above 100%. It shows how much a school system is being used, not whether children of the right age are in the right class.
GER = (total enrolment at a level, any age ÷ population of the official age group for that level) × 100
Example
Suppose a district has 100 children of primary-school age. Its primary schools enrol 90 of them plus 15 older children who had repeated classes or started late. GER = 105 ÷ 100 × 100 = 105%.
Don't confuse with
- Net Attendance Ratio (NAR) / Net Enrolment Ratio (NER): These count only children of the official age group, so they can never exceed 100%.
