Net Attendance Ratio
Also called: NAR · Topic: Measuring Development: Income, HDI and Sustainability · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "Development"
Meaning
Net Attendance Ratio (NAR) is the number of children in the official age group for a level of education who are actually attending school at that level, shown as a percentage of all children in that age group. Children who are older or younger than the official age are left out, so NAR can never exceed 100. It shows how many children of the right age are really in school.
NAR = (children of the official age group attending that level ÷ all children in that age group) × 100
Example
NCERT (Class 10) gives the secondary-level NAR for ages 15–17 in 2017-18. It was 94 in Kerala, 73 in Haryana and 69 in Bihar. So nearly one-third of Bihar's 15–17-year-olds were not attending secondary school.
Don't confuse with
- Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER): GER counts enrolled students of any age, so it can go above 100%. NAR counts only children of the official age.
