Job security
Also called: Security of employment · Topic: Employment, Unemployment and Informalisation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Sectors of the Indian Economy"; Class 10, Ch 4 "Globalisation and the Indian Economy"
Meaning
Job security means a worker can expect their job to continue. They cannot be asked to leave without a reason. It is a key feature of the organised sector, along with fixed hours, paid leave and benefits. Unorganised workers usually lack it and can be dismissed at any time with no compensation. Labour-law reforms that make it easier to hire and fire workers, such as raising the prior-permission threshold to 300 workers under the Industrial Relations Code, affect job security directly.
Example
Kanta works in a government office. She has an appointment letter and cannot be removed without cause. Kamal works in a small private business and can be told to stop coming tomorrow, with nothing paid to him.
Don't confuse with
- Social security: this is protection through PF, gratuity, pension, maternity and medical benefits. Job security is only about keeping the job itself.
