Paid leave
Also called: Paid holidays · Topic: Employment, Unemployment and Informalisation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Sectors of the Indian Economy"
Meaning
Paid leave means days off work for which the worker still gets wages. It includes paid holidays, such as a weekly day off. Organised-sector workers get paid leave. Unorganised-sector workers usually get no pay for any day they do not work. So an illness, a festival or a family need can cost them a day's income.
Example
Kanta, who works in an organised-sector office, has Sundays off and still gets her full monthly salary. Kamal, an unorganised worker, loses that day's wage every time he misses work, even when he is sick.
Don't confuse with
- Lay-off: in a lay-off, the employer temporarily fails to give work because of a shortage of power or materials, a breakdown or similar reasons. The worker does not choose it. Paid leave is time off that the worker is entitled to take, with wages.
