Overtime

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Employment, Unemployment and Informalisation · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Sectors of the Indian Economy"; Class 10, Ch 4 "Globalisation and the Indian Economy"

Meaning

Overtime means working more hours than the fixed working hours of a job. In the organised sector, working hours are fixed, and workers get extra payment for every extra hour they work. In the unorganised sector, workers often work long hours but get no overtime pay. That makes overtime pay one clear sign of the gap between formal and informal jobs.

Example

Kanta works in an organised-sector office from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm. If she stays back two hours, she is paid for those extra hours. Kamal, an unorganised worker, works from 7.30 am to 8 pm and gets only his usual wage, with nothing extra.

Don't confuse with

  • Moonlighting: this means taking a second job along with a regular one, often without the main employer knowing. Overtime means extra hours in the same job, paid by the same employer.
