Manufactured goods

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Sectors of the Indian Economy · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 2 "Sectors of the Indian Economy"

Meaning

Manufactured goods are goods that nature does not make. They need a process of making, in a factory, a workshop or even at home. They are the output of the secondary sector, also called the industrial sector. Manufacturing turns natural products into forms that are more useful.

Example

Cotton becomes yarn and then cloth. Sugarcane becomes sugar or gur. Earth becomes bricks, which are used to build houses. Iron ore becomes steel, and steel becomes cars. In 2022 India produced about 2 crore two-wheelers, all of them manufactured goods.

Don't confuse with

  • Natural products: these come mainly from natural processes, such as cotton, milk and minerals, and are the output of the primary sector. Raw cotton is a natural product. Cloth woven from it is a manufactured good.
