Topic: Sectors of the Indian Economy · NCERT: Class 7, Ch 12 "Understanding Markets"
Meaning
A manufacturer is a person or company that makes goods for sale. Manufacturers work in the secondary sector. They take raw materials and turn them into finished goods. The work can happen in a big factory, a small workshop or at home.
Example
A car company that turns steel, glass and rubber into passenger vehicles is a manufacturer. So is a family in a village that makes wooden furniture at home and sells it in the local market.
Don't confuse with
- Trader or seller: a shopkeeper who only buys and resells goods does not make anything. This is a tertiary activity. A manufacturer actually produces the good.
