Pink Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Pink Revolution means the modernisation of meat and poultry processing, with better slaughterhouses, hygiene, storage and packaging. It is one of the colour labels used for India's push to diversify beyond foodgrains. The term has more than one meaning. It is also used for growth in onion production and in pharmaceutical production. Like most colour labels, it comes from journalists and textbooks and is not an official scheme name.

Example

When a meat-processing plant replaces open-air slaughter with a modern, hygienic line and chilled storage for sale in cities, that is the kind of change the Pink Revolution describes.

Don't confuse with

  • Red Revolution: this is growth in meat (or tomato) production. Pink is about modern meat and poultry processing.
  • Silver Revolution: this is growth in egg and poultry production, not processing.
