Silver Revolution
Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Silver Revolution means growth in egg and poultry production. Poultry is the easiest livestock for small and landless households to start. It needs little land and money, and it gives quick income and cheap protein. It is one of the colour labels for India's diversification into allied activities, which are farm-linked activities that add income.
Example
Poultry has the largest share of India's livestock numbers, at 61% (Chart 5.1, Class 11). The 20th Livestock Census (2019) counted about 852 million poultry birds.
Don't confuse with
- Silver Fibre Revolution: this refers to cotton, not eggs. UPSC often tests this trap.
- Pink Revolution: this is the modernisation of meat and poultry processing, not egg and poultry output.
