Red Revolution

Indian Economy glossary

Topic: Rural Development: Diversification, Allied Sectors and Organic Farming · NCERT: Beyond NCERT

Meaning

The Red Revolution means growth in meat production. The same label is also used for growth in tomato production. It is one of the colour labels for India's diversification into allied activities, which are farm-linked activities such as livestock rearing that add income. Meat, eggs, wool and other by-products are "emerging as important productive sectors for diversification" (Class 11, Rural Development). The label comes from journalists and textbooks, not from a named government scheme.

Example

A landless family in a dry district rears goats and sheep for meat. This adds income when crop work is scarce and is the kind of growth the Red Revolution refers to.

Don't confuse with

  • Pink Revolution: this is the modernisation of meat and poultry processing (and is also used for onion or pharmaceuticals). Red is about raising meat or tomato output.
