BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The BBIN Motor Vehicles Agreement was signed in 2015 by Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal. BBIN is made from the first letters of these four countries. Under the agreement, passenger and cargo vehicles from one member could drive across the borders of the others. Today goods are often moved from one truck to another at the border. The agreement would cut this delay and lower trade costs in the region. Bhutan has not ratified it, which means its parliament has not formally approved it, so the agreement is not fully in force.
Example
Under the agreement, a cargo truck from Bangladesh could carry goods through India into Nepal without unloading at each border. The India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway is a related project that would carry this kind of road link further east.
Don't confuse with
- India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway: this is a road being built from India to Thailand through Myanmar. The BBIN agreement builds no road. It sets the rules that let vehicles cross borders.
