Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Chennai-Vladivostok Eastern Maritime Corridor is a sea route of about 5,600 nautical miles. It runs between Chennai on India's east coast and Vladivostok, Russia's port on the Pacific Ocean. Ships pass through the Malacca Strait and the South China Sea. A voyage takes about 24 days. The older route through Europe takes about 40 days. So the corridor makes India-Russia trade faster and cheaper (verify current).
Example
Ships on this route carry coal, oil and fertiliser between Russia's Far East and Chennai, Tamil Nadu (verify current).
Don't confuse with
- International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC): INSTC goes west and north from Mumbai through Iran to Moscow and St Petersburg, using ships, railways and roads. The Eastern Maritime Corridor goes east and travels only by sea.
