Bogibeel Bridge
Topic: Transport and Communication in India · NCERT: Beyond NCERT
Meaning
The Bogibeel Bridge is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge. Trains run on a lower deck and vehicles on an upper road deck. It is about 4.9 km long and crosses the Brahmaputra near Dibrugarh in Assam. It opened in 2018. The Brahmaputra is wide and braided (split into many channels), and it floods every year, so very few fixed crossings existed. The bridge joins the river's south bank to the north bank. This makes it strategic: troops and supplies can move quickly towards the Arunachal Pradesh border.
Example
Before the bridge, people and goods going from Dibrugarh (south bank) to Dhemaji and the Arunachal foothills (north bank) depended on ferries or long road detours. Bogibeel now gives a direct all-weather rail and road link.
Don't confuse with
- Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbour Link): India's longest sea bridge, about 21.8 km. It carries road traffic only and crosses the sea, not a river.
