Vande Bharat Express

Geography glossary

Meaning

The Vande Bharat Express is a semi-high-speed train set built in India. "Semi-high-speed" means it is faster than normal express trains but slower than true bullet trains. A train set has its own motors spread along the coaches, so it needs no separate engine. That helps it speed up and slow down quickly. It is made at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. It shows India's growing ability to build modern trains itself.

Example

The first Vande Bharat Express ran in 2019 between New Delhi and Varanasi. Chair car versions now run on many routes, and sleeper versions are being added (verify current).

Don't confuse with

  • Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail: a true high-speed (bullet train) line of about 508 km. It uses Japanese Shinkansen technology for speeds up to 320 km/h. Vande Bharat runs on existing tracks.
