Meaning

The New Pamban Bridge is a rail bridge across Palk Bay. It opened in April 2025 and links Rameswaram on Pamban island to mainland Tamil Nadu. It is India's first vertical-lift sea bridge. One section of the deck rises straight up, like a lift, so that ships can pass beneath. It then comes back down for trains. It replaces the old Pamban rail bridge, which had a deck that opened in two halves. The new bridge restores a strong rail link to the pilgrim town of Rameswaram.

Example

When a boat needs to sail through the channel between the mainland and Pamban island, the lift span near the middle of the bridge rises. Trains to Rameswaram cross once the span comes back down.

Don't confuse with

  • Atal Setu: a road-only sea bridge in Mumbai, between Sewri and Nhava Sheva. It is India's longest sea bridge and has no lifting section.
