Cairo-Cape Town Highway
Also called: Trans-African Highway · Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Cairo-Cape Town Highway is a road that runs from Cairo in Egypt to Cape Town in South Africa. It is the north-south axis, or main line, of Africa's road network. It crosses many countries and links the far north of the continent with the far south. This matters because Africa has few railways, and most of them only link ports with the interior.
Example
The highway starts at Cairo on the Nile in Egypt and runs south through eastern Africa. It ends at Cape Town at the southern tip of the continent.
Don't confuse with
- Algiers-Conakry highway: NCERT also mentions this road. It runs from Algiers in Algeria, on the Mediterranean coast, to Conakry in Guinea in West Africa. It does not run the length of the continent like the Cairo-Cape Town Highway.
