Stuart Highway
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Stuart Highway is Australia's main north-south road. It runs from Darwin on the north coast through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs in the dry interior. NCERT says it reaches Melbourne. In fact it ends at Port Augusta in South Australia, and other roads continue south from there. It links the thinly peopled centre of Australia with the coasts.
Example
A truck leaving Darwin in the Northern Territory can drive south through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs to Port Augusta. Along the way it crosses the hot, dry heart of Australia.
Don't confuse with
- Australian Trans-Continental Railway: a railway that runs west to east from Perth through Kalgoorlie, Port Augusta and Broken Hill to Sydney, across the Nullarbor Plain. The Stuart Highway runs north to south.
