Moscow-Vladivostok Highway
Topic: World Transport and Communication · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Moscow-Vladivostok Highway is Russia's main road eastward. It runs from Moscow across Siberia to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast. Most of Russia's dense road network lies in the industrial region west of the Ural Mountains, with Moscow as its hub. This highway serves the large, thinly settled land to the east. Russia is so vast that railways matter more than roads there. Railways carry about 90% of its transport.
Example
Goods can move by road from Moscow through Siberia to Vladivostok, Russia's port on the Pacific. Heavy, bulky freight on the same corridor still goes mostly by the Trans-Siberian Railway.
Don't confuse with
- Trans-Siberian Railway: the railway from St Petersburg and Moscow to Vladivostok (9,332 km, per NCERT). It is the main transport link across Siberia, while the highway plays a smaller role.
