Meaning

The Cambay basin is a long sedimentary basin in Gujarat around the Gulf of Khambhat. A sedimentary basin is a low area where layers of sand and mud piled up over millions of years. In time, these layers trapped oil and gas. It is one of India's main onshore oil and gas regions. It also gives gas to Gujarat's industries.

Example

Ankleshwar, where oil was struck in 1960, is the most important field in the basin. Other fields include Kalol, Mehsana, Nawagam, Kosamba and Lunej.

Don't confuse with

  • Mumbai High: an offshore field about 160 km out in the Arabian Sea. The Cambay basin fields are mostly on land, in Gujarat.
