Oil and Natural Gas Commission
Also called: ONGC · Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Mineral and Energy Resources"
Meaning
The Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) was set up in 1956 to search for and produce oil and gas in India. It became a corporation in 1994. Before 1956, the Digboi field in Assam was India's only producing oil area. ONGC carried out planned surveys across the country and found many new fields on land and at sea. This helped India depend a little less on imported oil.
Example
ONGC's finds include Ankleshwar in Gujarat (1960) and Mumbai High, about 160 km offshore in the Arabian Sea. Mumbai High was found in 1974 (NCERT says 1973) and has produced since 1976.
Don't confuse with
- Oil India Limited: a separate public company, working mainly in Assam and the North-East. It built the Naharkatiya–Barauni pipeline.
