Topic: Energy Resources of India: Conventional and Non-conventional · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 5 "Mineral and Energy Resources"; Class 12, Ch 7 "Transport and Communication"
Meaning
The Naharkatiya oilfield is in upper Assam, in north-eastern India. Oil was found there in 1953. Before then, Digboi was the only producing area. Naharkatiya, with Digboi and Moran-Hugrijan, makes Assam India's oldest oil region. Oil India Limited built a pipeline from Naharkatiya to the Barauni refinery in Bihar. It was one of India's first long oil pipelines.
Example
Crude from Naharkatiya in upper Assam was carried by pipeline to the Barauni refinery in Bihar. This linked the North-East's oil to refineries in the Ganga plains.
Don't confuse with
- Digboi oilfield: also in Assam, but much older. Oil was struck there in 1889, and it has its own refinery from 1901. Naharkatiya was found in 1953.
