Emigration
Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"
Meaning
Emigration means people moving out of a place or country. The people who leave are called emigrants. Emigration lowers the population at the place of origin. People emigrate because of push factors at home, such as unemployment or poor living conditions, and pull factors abroad, such as jobs.
Example
A worker from Kerala who goes to work in the UAE is an emigrant from India. Large-scale emigration from Kerala to the Gulf countries reduces Kerala's population.
Don't confuse with
- Immigration: this is moving into a place. The same person is an emigrant for the country left behind and an immigrant for the country reached.
