Meaning

An internally displaced person (IDP) is someone forced to leave home by conflict, violence or disaster who stays inside their own country. They do not cross an international border, so they remain under the care of their own government. The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) counts them in its yearly Global Report on Internal Displacement.

Example

In Sudan, in north-east Africa, people who flee the fighting but stay inside Sudan are internally displaced persons (verify current).

Don't confuse with

  • Refugee: a refugee has crossed into another country because of a well-founded fear of persecution. An IDP stays within their own country's borders.
