Topic: World Population: Distribution, Density, Growth and Migration · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 2 "The World Population: Distribution, Density and Growth"
Meaning
Immigration means people moving into a new place or country. The people who arrive are called immigrants. Immigration adds to the population at the place of destination. It is driven by pull factors such as jobs, peace, security and better facilities. Some ageing countries use immigration to fill labour shortages.
Example
A Kerala worker who moves to the UAE is an immigrant in the UAE. Because of such immigration, the actual growth of the Gulf states is much higher than their natural growth.
Don't confuse with
- Emigration: this is moving out of a place. One journey makes the same person an emigrant at the origin and an immigrant at the destination.
