Exclusive method
Topic: Geographical Data: Sources, Compilation and Processing · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Data - Its Source and Compilation"
Meaning
The exclusive method is a way of setting class limits when grouping data. The upper limit of one class is the same number as the lower limit of the next class, as in 20–30 and 30–40. A value that falls exactly on a boundary goes into the class where it is the lower limit. So the class 20–30 really means "20 and under 30". This rule stops any value from being counted twice.
Example
NCERT groups the geography scores of 60 students into ten classes of 10 using this method. A student who scored exactly 30 goes into the 30–40 class, not the 20–30 class.
Don't confuse with
- Inclusive method: here both limits belong to the class (20–29, 30–39), so the next class starts one unit higher and no two classes share a boundary number.
