Grouping of data

Geography glossary

Also called: Classification of data · Topic: Geographical Data: Sources, Compilation and Processing · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 1 "Data - Its Source and Compilation"

Meaning

Grouping of data means sorting raw data into classes so that a big jumble of numbers becomes smaller and easier to read. First you find the range of the data, which is the largest value minus the smallest. The range decides how many classes to make and how wide each class should be. Class width is called the class interval, which is the upper limit minus the lower limit (10 in the class 20–30). Grouping shows how the values are spread out.

Example

NCERT has the geography scores of 60 students, ranging from 02 to 96. These are grouped into ten classes with a class interval of 10, such as 0–10, 10–20 and so on, and tally marks are used to count the scores into each class.

Don't confuse with

  • Tabulation: arranges any data in rows and columns with a title, headings and source. It does not need to sort values into classes.
