Fallow other than current fallow
Also called: Old fallow, Other fallow, Other than current fallow · Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 1 "Resources and Development"; Class 12, Ch 3 "Land Resources and Agriculture"
Meaning
Fallow other than current fallow is land that can be farmed but has been left unfarmed for more than 1 year and less than 5 years. It is also called old fallow or other fallow. If the land stays unfarmed for more than 5 years, it is recorded as culturable wasteland instead. This category fell over time as farmers brought idle land back under the plough.
Example
Between 1950-51 and 2019-20, other fallow fell from 10.2% to 6.4% of India's total cultivable land. This is one reason there is little spare land left to expand farming.
Don't confuse with
- Current fallow: left unfarmed for 1 agricultural year or less, mainly so the soil can get back its fertility naturally.
- Culturable wasteland: left unfarmed for more than 5 years.
