Land put to non-agricultural uses
Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Land Resources and Agriculture"
Meaning
Land put to non-agricultural uses is land used for anything other than farming. It includes villages and towns, roads, canals, industries and shops. This category has had the highest rate of increase of all land-use categories since 1950-51. The reason is that industry, services and cities grow faster than farming. The new land often comes from farmland and wasteland, and this is most visible around cities.
Example
As cities grow, nearby farmland is built over. Growing towns such as Gurugram, next to Delhi, have spread onto farmland. Highways and solar parks also use up land in this way.
Don't confuse with
- Barren and wasteland: this land is unused because it cannot be farmed. Land under non-agricultural uses is in active use, but for buildings, transport or industry.
