Reporting area
Topic: Land Use, Farming Systems and Cropping Seasons in India · NCERT: Class 12, Ch 3 "Land Resources and Agriculture"
Meaning
Reporting area is the area for which land revenue departments keep land-use records. The nine land-use categories always add up to it. It can change when revenue estimates are revised. It is smaller than India's full area because some regions do not report fully. Most north-eastern states except Assam do not report fully, and the areas held by Pakistan and China have not been surveyed.
Example
India's reporting area is about 30.8 crore hectares. Its geographical area is about 32.87 crore hectares (verify current). Land records cover only about 93% of India's 3.28 million sq km.
Don't confuse with
- Geographical area: measured by the Survey of India, and it does not change. Reporting area is set by revenue records and can change.
