Meaning

The India Ageing Report 2023 was prepared by UNFPA (the UN Population Fund) and IIPS (the International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai). It studies India's older people and what lies ahead. It expects the share of Indians aged 60 and above to rise from about 10% in 2021 to over 20% by 2050. Most of the elderly will be women, and many of them will be widows. The report matters because it warns that India must plan for pensions, health care and care homes while it is still young.

Example

Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the far south are ageing fastest, because birth rates fell there long ago (verify current). Policy responses include pensions, the Senior Citizens Act 2007 and Ayushman Bharat cover for everyone aged 70 and above (2024).

Don't confuse with

  • Census of India: the census counts every person once in 10 years. The India Ageing Report is a study that uses such data to project future ageing.
