Khadi

Geography glossary

Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 6 "Manufacturing Industries"

Meaning

Khadi is cloth that is spun by hand and woven by hand. Mahatma Gandhi promoted it during the freedom struggle to support swadeshi, the idea of using goods made in India instead of foreign goods. Khadi is a cottage industry, which means the work is done in people's homes with simple tools. It gives home-based jobs to many spinners and weavers, especially in villages.

Example

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), set up in 1957, supports khadi spinners and weavers across India. It helps them sell their cloth through khadi outlets.

Don't confuse with

  • Handloom cloth: handloom cloth is woven by hand, but its yarn may be spun in a mill. Khadi must be both hand-spun and hand-woven.
  • Mill cloth: this is made in factories by machines, as in the cotton mills of Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
