Textile industry

Geography glossary

Topic: Manufacturing Industries of India: Location and Distribution · NCERT: Class 10, Ch 6 "Manufacturing Industries"

Meaning

The textile industry turns fibres such as cotton, jute, silk, wool and synthetics into yarn, cloth and garments. It has a special place in India's economy because it gives a large share of industrial output, jobs and export earnings. NCERT calls it the only industry in India that is self-reliant and complete across the value chain. That means every step happens within India, from raw fibre to the highest-value finished products.

Example

Cotton grown in Gujarat and Maharashtra is spun into yarn and woven into cloth. That cloth is then made into garments for export at clusters such as Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu. The new PM MITRA parks (2023) aim to bring this whole "farm to foreign" chain onto one site. One of them is at Navsari in Gujarat.

Don't confuse with

  • Cotton textile industry: this is only one branch of the textile industry. Jute, silk, wool and synthetic fibres are other branches.
